10.10.2011 - We just lauched the free online GS1 eLEARN trainings! ( 10 October 2011 )

05.07.2011 - Specifications concerning the access to the online services of GS1 Romania ( 05 July 2011 )

Bucharest’s City Hall has deallocated, in the last days, the aerial cables from the center of the city, belonging to telecommunication operators, among which many internet providers, in order to move the infrastructure to the underground network Netcity.

In order to prevent the situations in which the Internet connection is temporary down on certain networks, regardless of the cause of the incident, GS1 Romania has 3 simultaneous optic fibre outputs, each ensured by a different Internet provider.

In spite of this, due to the big number of Internet links between providers that were physically cut in a very short amount of time by Bucharest’s City Hall, and although the presence of GS1 Romania in the virtual space was uninterrupted, starting with 05.07.2011 many GS1 members found themselves unable to access our online services, because the outside access towards our websites was highly limited.

We hope that the situation created by the City Hall will be fixed soon and that the physical Internet links that were interrupted will be repaired, so that the online services of GS1 Romania can be accessed again by all the members, regardless of their Internet provider.

Searching barcodes on mobile phones is now available! ( 27 September 2010 )

CODALOC (http://codaloc.gs1.ro) - the online barcodes allocation tool - which has been added a new function: to each barcode there can be associated an Internet link to:
* the product itself, containing information that doesn't fit on the label,
* promotions,
* the company.

The Internet link can be added accessing CODALOC, Product List menu, click on Product Description and type the Product Internet Link.

This new function, together with the new mobile GEPIR application (www.coduridebareonline.ro or m.coduridebareonline.ro) - which actually is a webpage, with the advantage of opening it with any mobile phone connected to the Internet - can become a powerful marketing tool for the companies which implemented or intend to implement mobile marketing as a part of their market strategy.

By typing the 13 numbers of the product barcode, the application brings information from the GS1 Global Electronic Party Information Registry (GEPIR) about:
* Product:
- GTIN
- Brand Name
- Item Name
- Information Provider GLN
- Net Content
- Last Change Date Time
- Internet Link
* Manufacturer:
- GLN
- Information Provider GLN
- Last Change Date Time
- GCP
- Party Name
- Street Address
- Postal Code
- City
- Country ISO Code
- Contact Name
- Communication Channel: E-mail, Telefax, Telephone

In case of promotions, a special function can be activated on request: when searching a barcode - the direct Internet link of the promotion will be displayed, instead of the information from the GEPIR.

Check the test code with Internet link at www.coduridebareonline.ro: 5940010700185

Update GEPIR ( 09 July 2010 )

Starting with 09.07.2010, the GEPIR Global Catalog provides a search for Romanian SSCCs - option Search by Container Code (SSCC).

We remind you that GS1 logistic tags can be generated online at www.csean.ro, using your username and password from the GS1 Romania contract.

GEPIR's classic function - Search by Barcode (GTIN) - will be upgraded by the end of this year, we hope, by the adding of a new facility (link to the internet page of the product/producing company).

A new GS1 Standard for Product Identification - fundamental for the safety of pacients and for upgrading the healthcare distribution chains ( 26 January 2010 )

The standard ensures the efficient harmonization of the systems for bar-codes, the RFID and for traceability in healthcare, at an international level.

GS1 Healthcare, the global group of users in healthcare, created based on volunteer work, announced in Bruxelles, the publication of the GS1 Standard for Automated Identification and Data Capture – AIDC for medical products. This volunteer standard assures the various healthcare actors a common set of data and data carriers for medical products, including specific indications regarding the selection and utilization of:
- The most appropriate product identification keys;
- Extra data about the product and its manufacture, meaning the lot number, the expiration date, the serial number (when needed);
Data carriers, including: linear or bidimensional bar-codes or identification tags through radio-frequency (Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

“The large scale implementation of the systems for for Automated Identification and Data Capture in healthcare will upgrade the safety of patients by reducing errors of administrating the medicine, by creating conditions for a more efficient withdrawal from the market of unapropriate products and by a more effective rapportation of the events that imply side-effects of utilization.”, declared Mike Wallace, Director of Global Standards and Serialization at the Abbot Laboratories and Co-President of GS1 Healthcare, “The present standard will help eliminate the inefficiencies on the distribution chains, allowing the various actors involved to upgrade and integrate their processes.”

“The implementation of this standard will assure the unambiguous identification of medical products by any participant in the foreign distribution chains”, declared Joe Pleasant, Chief Information Officer la Premier, Inc. and member of the Global Leadership Team of GS1 Healthcare, “Healthcare must make the most of the technological advances, in order to create more efficient distribution chains, bringing us a step closer to other models of distribution chains from other industries.”

“We need a global vision: Healthcare is a global industry where partners from the distribution chains exchange goods and information. The non-standard demands, specific per country have a major impact on the type of products and on the management of distribution chains”, declared Volker Zeinar, Global Coordination Auto-ID Affairs la B Braun and member of the Global Leadership Team of GS1 Healthcare, “The global standards are key factors for success in everything that is related to the upgrade of processes for providers. ”

“Many countries readjusted the identification systems domain for products in order to register the medical products and to compensate the costs,” declared Ulrike Kreysa, Healthcare Director at GS1 Global Office, “In spite of this, the utilization of these numbers for managing the distribution chains is inefficient. A GS1 Identification Key can be mapped over a national number, from a national database, by the owner of the label. Over 65 countries accept, at this moment, the GS1 Identification Keys for medical products.”

The GS1 Standards assure the interoperability and compatibility and allow the partners to respect several requirements concerning identification, traceability and the cataloging and certification of the product. Various international authorities already created, or are creating a settlement of the automated identification, the serialization or the traceability systems in healthcare, in order to upgrade patient safety. Here we include The European Committee, Food and Drug Administration from the United States, ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency), and the Healthcare Ministry in Turkey and India. “This standard assures a global view, considering all the specific requirements of medical products.”, Mrs. Kreysa concluded. Through this global standard, GS1 accomplished several important developments, including:
- Recognizing the value of the bidimensional GS1 DataMatrix bar-code, which fulfills the specific requirements of healthcare distribution chains, including the need to encode more fixed and variable information, and the need to use a bar-code which covers only a small part of the packaging, but also the need to directly mark some parts (surgical instruments for example). This type of bar-code will be used in pharmacies and hospitals.
- The confirmation of the fact that the identification through GTIN-14 (Global Trade Item Number on 14 digits) will be used in non-retails applications.

For more information about the impact on industry of this development, see the positive declarations at the web address: www.gs1.org/healthcare/library.

“In the last 3 years, more that 100 experts from all over the word, representing every segment of the distribution chains in healthcare, have contributed to the development of this GS1 global standard.”, declared Grant Hodgkins, Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Co-President of the Work Group AIDC Application Standards and member of GS1 Healthcare Global Leadership Team, “In more than 150 meetings and more than 4500 hours of work, our teams formed the requirements for the business environment, than came with global solutions that respond to these requirements. The healthcare industry can now begin with the effort of putting this standard in practice, having the same gains that were already proven in other sectors through the utilization of the GS1 Global Standards.”, M. Hodgkins concluded.

GS1 MobileCom Steering Committee formed ( 07 September 2009 )

Proving once again the commitment of leading brands and retailers to using GS1 standards to connect businesses and consumers, six global brands and retailers are leading an effort to allow businesses and consumers to interact using mobile phones supported by open standards.

Representatives from Nestlé, Kraft, Johnson & Johnson, Walmart, Metro and Carrefour join GS1 Colombia, GS1 Hong Kong and GS1 France in the newly formed GS1 MobileCom Steering Committee.

“The Steering Committee is a group of organisations dedicated to using GS1 standards as a foundation for mobile commerce. It shows that brands and retailers are convinced that mobile technology will become a key touch point for consumers in coming years,” commented Vanderlei Santos (Nestlé), co-chair of the Steering Committee.

GS1 MobileCom is a cross-industry initiative involving manufacturers, retailers, mobile industry companies and solution providers that aims for:

• all consumers to have access to trusted product information and related services via their mobile phones;
• all stakeholders to use open standards to make this possible and so ensure inter-operable, scalable and cost-effective applications.

The Steering Committee aims to represent all key stakeholders with global scope including manufacturers, retailers, mobile industry companies and solution providers. As a result, there are currently open positions for 3 companies from the mobile industry or the wider solution provider community.

“We are happy to start to work more closely with the mobile industry to develop a truly balanced vision of the mobile commerce ecosystem and create an simple, reliable and intuitive consumer experience,” said Olivier Raynal (Carrefour), co-chair of the Steering Committee.

The launch of the 2009 Code for Good Practices in the Scanning Domain ( 15 April 2009 )

In order to support the costumers, the 2009 version of the Code of Good Practices in Scanning was launched, a collection of procedures for stores that guarantee the consumers that the Price Shown at the shelf is identical to the Price Paid at the selling point, after scanning the product code.

Today, on the 15th of April, at Marriot Hotel, GS1 Romania – The National Association of Article Codification in the GS1 System, with the help of SELGROS Cash&Carry Romania and with Unilever South Central Europe as a sponsor, officially launched the Code of Good Practices in Scanning 2009.

The professional initiative benefits from the support of the National Authority for the Protection of Customers for almost 3 years and already has four important members of the national retail domain: PRAKTIKER Romania, METRO Cash&Carry Romania, SELGROS CASH & CARRY and CARREFOUR Romania.

The Event benefited from the presence of the leadership of the National Authority for the Protection of Customers, of top or senior management representatives from companies that are members of this Program, of representatives of the Industries and Services Committee of the Lower House, of other companies in the retail industry, of the MEDNET Marketing Research Center company and of the professional GS1 Romania Associations and the Association of Grand Commercial Network in Romania.

During her intervention, Mrs. Silvia Claudia MIHALCEA, Subsecretary of State, Vicepresident of ANPC highlighted that “ the National Authority for the Protection of Customers supports the GS1 initiative to coach as many en-gross and en-detail sales companies as it can in order to develop a type of commerce based on respecting consumer’s rights. In this way, the access of Romanian citizens to quality services and unambiguous prices is assured. ”

Mister Dorin IORDACHESCU, Acquisitions and Food Sales Director, SELGROS CASH & CARRY SRL, mentioned that: “The message Price Shown is Price Paid has been a part of the SELGROS policy since the first store was opened, as a way of obtaining customer’s trust. This is why we were interested in the program initiated by GS1 regarding the Code of Good Practices in Scanning, which lead to an official certification of the precision in SELGROS stores in labeling products. After we joined the Program, we focused on informing and training our staff and our customers in order to assure that they know their rights and obligations. We understand that applying the Code of Good Practices in Scanning will bring customers high quality services and SELGROS is going to promote it among the smaller merchants in Romania.”

Mister Cristian PETRESCU, Industries and Services Committee of the Lower House, said that: “The slogan promoted by the Code of Good Practices in Scanning, Price Shown is Price Paid, primarily represents a legal obligation and the implementation of the code is welcomed in order to strengthen and complete the respectation of law concerning the labeling of products in stores. ”

Mister Adrian MANOLACHE, General Secretary of the Association of Grand Commercial Networks in Romania highlighted that: “Having as members 20 of the most representative retailers in Romania, AMRCR assumed, along with GS1 Romania, the promotion of the Code of Good Practices in Scanning and launched an invitation to join to all its members. The immediate response came from Carrefour, followed by REAL HYPERMARKET ROMANIA, which is now discussing about implementing the Code. The involvement of AMRCR was determined by its position in the retail sector in Romania. From this position it was exposed to unwanted situations as a prime receptor of costumer complaints, thus, it is the first to want the respectation of the Code of Good Practices in Scanning.”

Mrs. Lacramioara Laura VOINEA, Managing Director of MEDNET Marketing Research Center presented some of the results of the studies made and said that: “Following a study made in 2008 through CATI method, the price is a very important criteria in the behavior of consumers. But, surprisingly, the price of products is only on the third place in list of aspects that are important to consumers. The first place is taken by the“clear display of the price, readable at the shelf”, followed by the “”the accordance of the price shown on the label with the one at the cash-desk. This might be explained by the high number of complaints registered, in time, in this area.”
“The Code of Good Practices in Scanning promoted by GS1 Romania and supported by the National Authority for Consumer Protection represents a set of technical and behavioral rules in trading units, which, when applied, eliminates errors in the identification and labeling of products at the shelf, resulting in a higher transparency for the customer and increasing his level of trust towards the price shown at the shelf which will be identical to the one at the cash-desk. The code permits the line-up of existing products to the best approach of this subject, at an international level.”, announced mister Ciprian IOSEP, President of the GS1 Romania Association.

GS1 Romania representatives said that there still are two big retail network which are still preparing to join this Code of Good Practices. Global Standard One (GS1) is the most important global organization which develops and administrates the international standards for the identification, codification and communication in the modern distribution chains domain.

GS1 Germany uses GEPIR in fight against rogue numbers and counterfeiting 2008 ( 19 December 2008 )

GEPIR already is today the tool for fighting illegal numbers. With the current GEPIR Version 3.1 and with the additional information, like historical data, all users could be sure that they are using the correct GS1 keys.

We can take GEPIR Germany as an example with the 130 000 GLN (Companies member of GS1), 3 500 GLN (Companies information withheld, but a member of GS1), 60 000 GLN (Companies that are no longer a member of GS1)

For users searching “German numbers” in the database of approx. 200 000 GLN, this means that if a requested number is not found, it is an illegal number!!

Since July 2008 GS1 Germany integrated those 60 000 historical GLN Information into GEPIR. This information is not shown but the user is informed that the requested GS1 key is not allowed to be used anymore. The phenomenon that came up with adding historical GLNs was the so called “GEPIR police”. Before users type in GS1 keys into their ERP, EDI or CRM system they look up those numbers in GEPIR. When they are informed that the number should not be used anymore, they get in touch GS1 Germany, that is able to convince the identified companies to become a regular member of GS1.

“In Sweden, which has always kept historical data, approximately one percent of GEPIR queries are for unallocated or unpaid numbers.

June 13, 2007 -- HL7 and GS1 have announced today they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that begins an era of collaboration in developing global standards for improving patient care.
GS1 aims to adapt their existing global supply chain standards to the specific needs of the healthcare sector. GS1’s global standards for automatic identification (through bar codes and radio frequency identification) provide the opportunity to make the healthcare supply chain more efficient and accurate, and thus safer. Medication errors can be avoided by automatically matching product data to patient data. These standards also enable effective traceability and reduce counterfeiting.
HL7’s clinical interoperability standards, such as the Version 3 Messaging Standard, increase the effectiveness and efficiency in exchanging, managing, and integrating electronic healthcare information.
HL7 has been successful in improving information sharing at the time and point of care to enhance quality and reduce errors.

Michel van der Heijden, President Healthcare, GS1, said: “We are convinced that the collaboration with HL7 will be at the benefit of the healthcare community by aligning the standards development and joining forces in promoting global standards in the healthcare community.”

In 2005, GS1 established The GS1 Global Healthcare User Group (GS1 HUG) which has been primarily focused to develop global standards for automatic identification in Healthcare. The GS1 HUG consists of participants from all stakeholders of the Healthcare supply chain: manufacturers, wholesalers & distributors, as well as hospitals and pharmacy retailers. GS1 HUG also maintains close contacts with regulatory agencies and trade organizations worldwide.

“For the past 20 years, HL7 has been successful in improving interoperability of healthcare information sharing at the time and point of care, that improves the quality of patient care and reduces errors,” said Dr. Charles Jaffe, CEO of HL7, “The partnership with GS1 will accelerate the development and adoption of global standards for sharing information among our stakeholders.”
“GS1 is committed to the healthcare sector to facilitate the development and adoption of global supply chain standards, first and foremost to improve patient safety”.

EPCglobal launches Transport and Logistics Business Action Group ( 12 December 2005 )

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is widely promoted as providing many benefits within the supply chain, with important contributing benefits accrued throughout transport and logistics processes.

Many transport and logistic enterprises have experimented with RFID exploring opportunities for improving operational effectiveness and efficiency. It is probably fair to say that most transport and logistics enterprises have eventually considered both the technical challenges, as well as the lack of standards, as a major barrier to widespread adoption. EPCglobal’s Transportation and Logistics Services (TLS) Provider Business Action Group (BAG) is being established to tackle these concerns.

The TLS Group is one of an expanding number of industry focused global RFID standards groups developed under the EPCglobal standards framework. This framework provides the assured commitment, that all standards work completed will be compatible with your transport and logistics partners, as well as your customers’ requirements too. The TLS BAG is en route to being launched in the autumn of 2005 with direct support and contribution from more than 25 transportation and logistics organizations.

The objective of the groups is to develop standards that meet with business justified and clearly defined community goals. Interoperability, important to the majority of transportation and logistics process is likely to be a key driver. It is anticipated that each enterprise will use the standards developed under the EPCglobal framework to create their own products and services, exploiting opportunities provided by EPCglobal standards to their competitive advantage.
